WAEC Announces Provisional Results; Decline in Performance Noted
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the provisional results of candidates who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The results, made available on Monday, December 30, 2024, reveal some significant disciplinary actions and performance trends.
According to a statement from WAEC, 4,108 candidates had individual subject results cancelled, while the results of 781 candidates were withheld for further investigation.
Among those affected, 483 candidates had their entire results cancelled due to the possession of mobile phones in the examination hall, a violation of the exam rules.
Additionally, 209 candidates had their results withheld for other suspected offenses.
The results are now accessible online through WAEC’s official website, allowing candidates to check their performance.
Performance Trends in Core Subjects
A closer look at the results shows a decline in performance in three core subjects compared to the previous year. English Language, Integrated Science, and Social Studies saw lower scores overall. However, Core Mathematics did not show any such decline and remained consistent with prior performance.
WAEC has urged all stakeholders to review the results and continue working towards improving the integrity and performance of future examinations.
The subject results of candidates from 319 schools have been withheld over allegations of collusion.
“These cases are still under investigation. The withheld results of these candidates may be released or cancelled depending on the outcome of the investigations”, the statement added.
The alleged malpractices include bringing foreign material such as prepared notes, printed material and mobile phones to the examination hall, collusion among candidates, and planned cheating which occurred with the connivance of some supervisors and school authorities.
