A group of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) who served under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) between 2017 and 2024 has publicly declared their support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday, June 23, 2025, at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, the group—operating under the name Forum of Former MMDCEs for Dr. Bawumia—announced what they described as an “unwavering, strategic, and operational commitment” to the former Vice President’s candidacy. Their endorsement comes ahead of the NPP’s internal flagbearer elections scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The group emphasized that their endorsement goes beyond rhetoric, representing a practical, on-the-ground campaign effort to secure Dr. Bawumia’s nomination and victory.

“With over 95% of us having served as regional or constituency executives—many for more than 16 years—we have the institutional knowledge and grassroots networks to champion Dr. Bawumia’s campaign in all 16 regions,” they stated.

The former MMDCEs cited extensive consultations and comparative assessments of potential aspirants as the basis for their decision. They concluded that Dr. Bawumia possesses the competence, vision, and nationwide appeal necessary to lead both the NPP and the country into the future.

The forum commended Dr. Bawumia’s track record in government, highlighting his role in driving Ghana’s digital transformation through initiatives such as the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the introduction of paperless port systems—reforms they believe have significantly modernized the economy.

They also praised his leadership style as inclusive, humble, and unifying—traits they said have endeared him to the party’s grassroots, youth, and swing voters.

“Dr. Bawumia’s broad appeal, demonstrated during the 2024 campaign, gives the NPP a competitive edge. Starting with a well-known, tested candidate positions the party strongly going into 2028,” the group argued.

The former MMDCEs stressed that Dr. Bawumia strikes a vital balance between continuity and innovation—qualities they believe are essential for sustaining Ghana’s development while charting new progress.

They pledged to actively support his campaign by leveraging their grassroots influence and operational experience. Their commitments include door-to-door engagement, fact-based counter-campaigning against misinformation, fundraising, and logistical backing.

“We’re not just endorsing—we are mobilising. Our networks, built across every region, will be fully activated to drive Dr. Bawumia’s vision to every voter,” the forum concluded.
