An atmosphere of tension hangs over the Muslim community in Anweaso, Denkyembour District, Eastern Region, following the mysterious disappearance of 25-year-old Danjuma Laliatu.
Laliatu went missing after an altercation on October 7, 2024, with a man named Kwadwo Ahenfie over a dispute regarding farm boundaries. Family members reported that she returned home that day with multiple injuries, claiming she had been attacked by Ahenfie, who shares a boundary with her farm.
She recounted that during the confrontation, she fought back and managed to escape, but lost her wrist beads in the struggle. Despite her injuries, she decided to return to the farm to retrieve her belongings but never came back home.
While Kwadwo Ahenfie was arrested by the Akwatia Police on October 8, he was released the same day. His family even celebrated his release with a party, an act that has further enraged Laliatu’s family and friends.
Alidu Issah, the missing woman’s uncle and family spokesperson, expressed their disappointment with the local police during a press briefing at their home in Akwatia. He called on the Inspector General of Police to intervene in the case.
“We were informed that our daughter had fought with Kwadwo on her farm and was injured. After reporting the incident to the police and local authorities, the youth organized a search party. We found evidence at the scene but did not locate our daughter,” he stated.
Issah added that at the police station, Ahenfie admitted to assaulting Laliatu, yet the police released him shortly thereafter.
“We are disheartened by the police’s decision to let the suspect go so easily. We urge the IGP to take charge of this case and conduct a thorough investigation,” he said, expressing the family’s frustration.
