John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has characterized the recent expulsion of four Members of Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin as indicative of a worsening crisis in Ghana’s political landscape.

Mahama voiced his concerns regarding the state of democracy in Ghana, particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s recent stay on Speaker Bagbin’s ruling, which resulted in the indefinite adjournment of Parliament on Tuesday, October 22.

Speaking at the 80th anniversary celebration of the St. Joseph the Worker Anglican Church in Accra on Sunday, October 27, Mahama commended Bagbin for his management of the tense parliamentary situation.

He stressed the importance of revisiting Ghana’s constitution to prevent future conflicts and called for a more resilient governance structure to tackle the nation’s evolving challenges.

“Recently, we witnessed a near constitutional crisis in Parliament. If not for the Speaker’s mature decision to suspend the House, we could have faced a serious clash between the judiciary and Parliament. Our government is indeed in crisis,” Mahama stated.

“We need to reset and restart. It’s crucial to examine our constitution, revise it, and address its shortcomings to avoid such issues in the future. Our attitudes are in crisis.”
