Manchester United has officially named Ruben Amorim as their new head coach.
The 39-year-old Portuguese manager, currently with Lisbon club Sporting, will take the reins at Old Trafford on November 11, having signed a contract that extends until June 2027.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, a former United striker who has been serving as interim manager since Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday, will remain in charge for the team’s next three matches.
Amorim becomes the sixth permanent manager for United since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 after a 26-year tenure.
The club described him in a statement as “one of the most exciting and highly rated young coaches in European football.”
Sporting confirmed that United has paid a release clause of €11 million (£9.25 million) to secure Amorim’s services.
Amorim’s debut match in charge of the Red Devils is scheduled for November 24 against newly promoted Ipswich in the Premier League.
His first home game will be on November 28, facing Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League, followed by a league encounter against Everton the following weekend.
United will announce the composition of Amorim’s coaching staff in due course.
After a defeat to rivals Porto in the Portuguese Super Cup on August 3, Amorim has led Sporting to a 14-match unbeaten streak, including last season’s Primeira Liga title.
Before joining Manchester United, Amorim will be in the dugout for Sporting’s league match against Estrela on Friday and will also oversee the Champions League fixture against Manchester City on Tuesday. His final game with Sporting is expected to be on November 10 against Braga in the league, just before the international break for Nations League matches.
