The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced the destruction of excess and defective electoral materials for the Ahafo and Volta Regions in preparation for the upcoming 2024 general elections.
During a press briefing on November 15, the commission revealed that it had recalled ballot papers for these regions due to serialization errors.
In a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chairman of Operations, it was confirmed that the defective materials were destroyed by burning on Saturday, November 16, in the presence of key stakeholders.
“The destruction was witnessed by representatives from political parties, the National Intelligence Bureau, National Security, Ghana Police Service, and the Electoral Commission,” the statement noted.
To ensure transparency, the EC assured stakeholders that additional ballots with serialization discrepancies would also be accounted for and destroyed.
“The commission will account for all ballot papers printed for both regions on Sunday, November 17, 2024, which will also be burned due to the issues with the serial numbers. We will inform political parties and other stakeholders in advance to allow them to observe the destruction of these ballots,” the statement concluded.
