Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has voiced her concerns regarding the lack of consultation in the construction of AstroTurfs across Ghana.

Speaking at a gender empowerment series at Labadi Beach Hotel on November 18, she emphasized the importance of inclusive decision-making that reflects the diverse needs of the population.

In her address titled “Advancing Gender Equality: A National Dialogue on Current Policies and Innovative Measures for Local and National Impact,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang discussed how public infrastructure projects, including sports facilities, can either promote or impede gender equality.

The former Minister of Education noted that the absence of women and girls in the planning stages of these facilities highlights deeper systemic inequalities. She questioned whether their needs, interests, and schedules were taken into account during the development process.

She concluded by stressing that infrastructure development must prioritize inclusivity, ensuring equal benefits for all segments of society, especially women.

“I see beautiful AstroTurfs across our country, and while I support that initiative, I must ask: Is gender sensitivity being considered? I have not seen a single girl on any of those AstroTurfs, and I wonder why,” she remarked.

“Even in sports, we are perpetuating gender inequality. Were women involved in the discussions prior to the construction of these AstroTurfs to determine what games they would like to play and when they could participate? As we look to the future, I urge everyone to consider how we can create spaces that foster equal opportunities for both genders.”
