The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has intercepted a 40-foot container at Tema Port, uncovering a stash of illegal firearms and ammunition.
The container, marked MEDU4496951, arrived from the United States and was falsely declared to contain vehicles and personal belongings. During a thorough inspection, officials discovered 53 pistols, 74 magazines, and 65 live rounds of ammunition concealed in suitcases.
The seizure occurred on November 4, 2024, following an investigation by the GRA’s Intelligence and Preventive Units.
Brigadier General Zibrim Ayorrogo, Commissioner of Customs, confirmed the operation and stated that arrests have been made. He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the shipment’s intended recipients.
Brigadier General Ayorrogo emphasized that importing ammunition without the necessary licenses is a serious offense that will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
While the arrested agent and consignees have been granted bail, the Customs Division reaffirmed its commitment to securing Ghana’s borders against the illegal importation of arms and contraband.
