Ghana has been ranked 7th globally as one of the largest recipients of funding from the World Bank, having received a total of US$11.2 billion from the International Development Association (IDA) between 1961 and 2024.

The top three countries benefiting the most from IDA funding are Ethiopia (US$23.4 billion), Nigeria (US$18.8 billion), and Vietnam (US$18.5 billion).

Ghana is ranked 7th, while China follows in 8th place with US$10.2 billion in IDA funding.

Sub-Saharan Africa dominates the list, with eight of the top 10 countries being from the region.

Since its founding in 1960, the IDA, the World Bank’s concessional lending arm, has disbursed over US$287 billion to the world’s poorest nations, prioritizing support to remote and underserved areas.

Sub-Saharan African countries have received roughly 73% of all IDA funding, amounting to over US$210 billion. East Asia is the second-highest recipient region with US$41.8 billion, or 14.5% of the total.

Other regions include Europe and Central Asia (US$17.5 billion, 6.1%), Latin America and the Caribbean (US$11.2 billion, 3.9%), and the Middle East, which has received the smallest share at US$7.1 billion, or 2.5%.
