A tragic stampede at a football match in Nzerekore, Guinea, has resulted in the deaths of over 50 people, including children. The incident occurred on Sunday during the final of a local tournament held in honor of Guinea’s military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya.

Chaos erupted after a disputed penalty decision, leading to fans throwing stones and security forces using tear gas to disperse the crowd. The ensuing panic caused a deadly rush for the exits, leaving many injured and dozens dead.

Local authorities and the government have expressed their condolences and are investigating the incident. A coalition of political parties has called for an independent inquiry, criticizing the tournament as a political tool and demanding accountability for the loss of life.

The tragedy has highlighted concerns about crowd control measures and the use of force by security personnel at public gatherings in Guinea.
