A Kumasi High Court has remanded 14 individuals into prison custody for their alleged involvement in violent acts during Election Day disturbances in Damongo, located in the Savannah Region.
Out of the 16 individuals brought before the court, 14 were remanded while two minors were released and discharged.
The violence, which followed delays in announcing election results, resulted in the death of one person and significant damage to the Electoral Commission (EC) office.
Protesters, frustrated by the situation, reportedly stormed the Damongo Municipal Collation Center, setting the EC office on fire and causing widespread destruction.
Due to security concerns in the region, the case was moved from the Savannah Region to the Kumasi High Court for further proceedings.
The accused are facing nine charges, including unlawful damage, assault, causing harm, and obstructing electoral officers in the discharge of their duties.
The State Attorney requested a delay in the plea hearing to allow for additional investigations.
Meanwhile, the defense counsel argued for the release of the accused, emphasizing that two of them are minors. The court granted the release of the minors into the custody of a responsible guardian, Alhaji Imoro Seidu, who was required to leave his Ghana Card with the court registrar.
The court scheduled the next hearing for December 19, 2024, where the defendants will enter their pleas. The other suspects remain in prison custody as the investigation continues.
