Defense Minister Dominic Nitiwul has stated that the government should not be held accountable for any security lapses during the 2024 general elections.
He clarified that responsibility lies with the National Elections Security Task Force, led by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, which was tasked with ensuring security throughout the election process.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, December 16, following concerns raised by the Minority over the deaths of two individuals during the polls, Nitiwul emphasized that any issues related to election security should be addressed to the Task Force.
“During and after the elections, it was the National Elections Security Task Force, led by the IGP, that oversaw security,” Nitiwul explained. “If the Speaker or the House wishes to call for a briefing on election security, it should be directed to the IGP and his team, not government ministers or appointees, as they had no role in the security arrangements.”
He further defended the structure, stating, “It was appropriate that the Executive was not in charge of security, as it would be wrong for the government to judge its own actions in this matter.”
