In a historic moment for Ghana, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang was sworn in as the country’s first female Vice-President on January 7, 2025.
The ceremony took place in Accra, just before John Dramani Mahama took the oath of office for his second term as President under the Fourth Republic.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo administered the Oath of Allegiance and the Vice-President’s Oath to Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, marking a milestone in the nation’s political landscape.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who served as John Mahama’s running mate in the 2024 general elections, helped secure a decisive victory over the New Patriotic Party candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Her appointment as Vice-President is a historic achievement for women in Ghana and is seen as a significant step toward promoting gender equality in leadership roles across the country.
President Mahama’s return to office marks his second term after first serving as President from 2012 to 2017, bringing with it hopes for a renewed focus on national development and progress.
