The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has announced a major increase in the prize money for the 2024 TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), set to take place in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The winning team will now receive a 75% increase in prize money, bringing the total to $3.5 million.

Additionally, the total prize fund for the tournament has been boosted to $10.4 million, representing a 32% increase compared to previous editions.

Dr. Patrice Motsepe, CAF President, expressed excitement about the increased rewards and their role in strengthening African football. “The CHAN is a crucial tournament for developing talent and promoting football in Africa,” Motsepe said. “With the increased prize money of $3.5 million for the winner and the overall fund now at $10.4 million, we are reaffirming our commitment to supporting football on the continent.”

Motsepe stressed that the CHAN not only helps to showcase the talent of home-based African players but also plays a vital role in boosting the overall competitiveness of African football. “This competition contributes to the development of our teams and increases the global appeal of African football, which is key to attracting more sponsors, fans, and stakeholders.”

The 2024 CHAN will begin on February 1, 2025, with the final match scheduled for February 28, 2025.

So far, 17 teams have secured qualification, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Morocco, Guinea, Senegal, Mauritania, Niger, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Sudan, Zambia, Angola, and Madagascar.

The final two teams will join the competition after the remaining qualification rounds.

The prize increase and the growing prominence of the tournament highlight CAF’s ongoing efforts to elevate the stature of African football on the global stage.
