The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) has issued a warning, stating that an immediate injection of $90 million is necessary to prevent a looming power crisis in the country.

The urgent funding is required to purchase liquid fuel for thermal power plants, as a temporary disruption in natural gas supply caused by a West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCO) maintenance exercise has created a significant generation capacity shortfall.

To mitigate the crisis, GRIDCo has proposed several measures, including adjusting generator shutdown schedules and securing alternative fuels. Load-shedding, while considered a last resort, remains a possibility if the situation worsens.

The maintenance of the Nigeria-to-Ghana gas pipeline, originally scheduled for October 2024, has been postponed to January 2025, exacerbating the current fuel supply challenges.

GRIDCo has warned that a failure to address this situation promptly could lead to widespread and prolonged power outages, severely impacting the country’s economy and essential services.

Stakeholders are urging the government to take swift action to secure the necessary funding and implement the proposed measures to avert a potential “dumsor” crisis.
