The Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference has urged President John Dramani Mahama’s government to prioritize the immediate reintroduction and passage of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly known as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill.
In a meeting on January 14, President Mahama suggested that a government-backed bill would be more effective than the current Private Member’s bill. He emphasized that such a bill would allow for broader consultation and help build a national consensus.
The Bishops also underscored the importance of revising school curriculums to include moral and cultural teachings that reflect Ghanaian and African values.
Most Reverend Matthew Gyamfi, President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, reiterated the urgency of the situation, stating that the overwhelming support of Ghanaians for the bill must not be ignored. He added, “The will of the people should not be hindered by technicalities. Passing the bill into law should not prevent its inclusion in educational curricula, such as in civic studies or other relevant subjects.”
