President John Dramani Mahama is set to meet with the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on January 19 to discuss the escalating tensions in the Bawku and Walewale areas.

Mahama shared this plan during a visit to the Nayiri Palace on January 14, where he met with Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga II, the King and Overlord of the Mamprugu Kingdom.

The President expressed serious concern about the security situation in the Upper East and Northern regions, where violent clashes, stemming from chieftaincy disputes between ethnic groups, have led to casualties and widespread property damage.

Emphasizing the need for peace, Mahama acknowledged the significant role the Asantehene has played in resolving previous conflicts in the country. He expressed his intent to seek Otumfuo’s guidance once again to help address the current tensions and work toward lasting peace.

“Former President Nana Addo mentioned to me that the Otumfuo has been involved in efforts to resolve such issues. I’m scheduled to meet with him on January 19, and I will raise these matters with him. I will keep my father informed about the outcomes of the discussion,” Mahama stated.
