On January 16, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama announced the appointment of Abla Dzifa Gomashie as Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts. Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency, brings a wealth of experience and passion for the arts to the position.
A renowned actress, film producer, and scriptwriter, Gomashie has previously served as Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts from 2013 to 2017 during Mahama’s first term. In this role, she played a pivotal part in shaping key policy documents, such as the Ghana Culture Policy and the Creative Arts Industry Bill.
In addition to her political career, Gomashie is a respected figure in the arts community, having earned a Master of Philosophy in African Studies and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Ghana. She also holds the honorary title of Queen Mother in the Aflao Traditional Area.
Her extensive background in arts and culture extends beyond Ghana’s borders. Gomashie is an active member of the Film Federation of the African Union (FEPACI) and has contributed to the ECOWAS Committee for the Reparation of Stolen African Artefacts.
As Minister-designate, Gomashie is expected to build on her previous achievements, continuing her efforts to advance the arts sector. Industry professionals have praised her extensive knowledge, believing her appointment will lead to further progress in the Ministry, which oversees vital agencies like the Ghana Tourism Authority, National Film Authority, and National Theatre.
This new appointment positions Gomashie to make significant strides in driving Ghana’s cultural and creative industries forward.
