Dr. Jonathan Asante, a Political Science lecturer at the University of Cape Coast, has attributed 60 percent of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general election to the leadership of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

His comments follow statements made by Sammy Crabbe, the former Vice Chairman of the NPP, who criticized the party for being weak.

Dr. Asante explained that the neglect of party structures played a key role in the NPP’s significant electoral loss.

“The situation is akin to what is described in Jeremiah, where it says the fathers have eaten sour grapes and the children’s teeth are set on edge. I believe Mr. Akufo-Addo is responsible for about 60 percent of Dr. Bawumia’s defeat, while Dr. Bawumia himself is responsible for about 40 percent,” Dr. Asante remarked.

He went on to attribute the NPP’s failure to what he described as arrogance among government appointees and the party’s weak organizational structure, which he compared to a “one-man show.”

“These factors contributed to the mass opposition that led to the party’s loss in the 2024 elections. The goodwill simply wasn’t there, and the party’s structures were too fragile to mount an effective campaign,” he said.

Dr. Asante also suggested that the future success of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in elections would depend heavily on the performance of the current Mahama-led administration.
