President John Dramani Mahama has announced an adjustment to the curfew hours in the Bawku Municipality and surrounding areas in the Upper East Region, replacing the previous dawn-to-dusk restrictions with a new curfew from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.
This change takes effect from Monday, January 13, 2025.
In addition to the new curfew hours, a strict ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and offensive weapons remains in force. Anyone found violating this ban will face arrest and prosecution, as outlined in a statement from the Ministry of Interior.
The government has urged local chiefs, elders, and community leaders, as well as residents, to stay calm and seek peaceful, non-violent solutions to restore order.
To further address the rising tensions in Bawku and Walewale, President Mahama is scheduled to meet with Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Sunday, January 19, 2025, to discuss the situation.
