Accra, Ghana – George Opare Addo, Minister-Designate for Youth Development and Empowerment, has stressed the importance of providing alternative livelihoods to combat illegal mining, or “galamsey,” in Ghana.

During his vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee, Opare Addo emphasized that poverty in mining communities often drives individuals towards engaging in illegal mining activities. He advocated for the implementation of programs that offer alternative employment opportunities and promote sustainable economic development in these areas.

“Addressing the root causes of illegal mining, such as poverty, is crucial,” Opare Addo stated. “By providing alternative livelihoods, we can encourage communities to transition away from destructive practices and embrace sustainable economic activities.”

Opare Addo also highlighted the importance of environmental protection and the need to educate young people in mining communities about sustainable mining practices.

He emphasized the need for collaboration with the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to develop and implement comprehensive solutions that address the challenges of illegal mining while promoting sustainable economic growth.
