Kofi Adams, Ghana’s Minister-designate for Sports and Recreation, has vowed to improve the welfare of retired footballers, should he be confirmed by Parliament.
During his vetting by the Appointments Committee on January 30, 2025, Adams expressed his concern about the financial and health challenges many retired footballers face.
He highlighted the importance of providing structured support to ensure their well-being.
“We will encourage active athletes to invest in a pension scheme. If confirmed, we will put systems in place to support those who have retired,” Adams said.
In addition, Adams acknowledged the financial struggles within the sports sector, particularly the outstanding debt.
He expressed his commitment to working with stakeholders to find solutions and ensure a sustainable future for Ghanaian sports.
He also emphasized the need for reforms to address the GHC468 million debt and assured that the National Sports Authority (NSA) would play a pivotal role in resolving funding issues for the Black Stars.
Adams’ statements have raised hopes for significant reforms and a better future for both current and former sports professionals in Ghana.
