Former President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to launch the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares, to assist individuals dealing with chronic illnesses such as kidney and liver diseases, heart conditions, and hypertension.

Speaking during his ‘Thank You Tour’ in the Central Region on February 6, Mahama stressed the importance of strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system to ease the financial burdens of medical treatment. “We will prioritize healthcare by enhancing our hospitals and introducing the Mahama Cares fund to support those suffering from chronic diseases,” he said.

In addition to this initiative, Mahama announced plans to remove the cap on the National Health Insurance Levy, directing all funds into the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) to expand coverage for policyholders. “This change will enable the NHIA to fully settle payments for treatments provided to NHIS cardholders at healthcare facilities,” he explained.

Through this comprehensive approach, Mahama aims to ensure that healthcare becomes more accessible and equitable for all Ghanaians.
