Koforidua, Eastern Region – Ernest Yaw Kumi, Member of Parliament for Akwatia, has been convicted of contempt of court by a Koforidua High Court.

A bench warrant has been issued for his arrest due to his repeated absences from court.

The conviction stems from Mr. Kumi’s violation of an interim injunction issued on January 7, 2025, which prohibited him from being sworn in as MP-elect due to a legal challenge to his election.

Despite the injunction, Mr. Kumi presented himself to be sworn in on January 6, 2025.

Judge Justice Senyo Amedahe cited Mr. Kumi’s consistent failure to appear in court personally throughout the contempt proceedings.

The judge also dismissed a letter from the minority caucus of Parliament explaining the MP’s absences as due to parliamentary duties, stating that accepting the letter would contradict his own previous ruling.
