A Sudanese military plane has crashed in a residential area near Khartoum, resulting in at least 19 deaths, including military officers and civilians.
The crash occurred late Tuesday during takeoff from the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman, part of the greater Khartoum area. The aircraft impacted a civilian house in the Karrari district of Omdurman.
The health ministry reported that five injured civilians were transported to Nau hospital in Omdurman, along with the deceased. Major-General Bahr Ahmed, a senior commander in Khartoum, was reportedly among those killed.
The Sudanese military, engaged in conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since April 2023, confirmed the crash and reported that firefighters had contained the resulting blaze.
While the military statement did not specify the cause of the crash, military sources indicated to Reuters that it was likely due to technical issues.
