Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, has strongly condemned the alleged police shooting of youths in Bawku, amid rising tensions in the area following the incident.
In a statement released on Wednesday, April 9, the MP distanced himself from claims suggesting he had directed police officers to permit residents access to the local market or to engage in any commercial activity.
“I totally condemn the actions of the police in shooting some youth in Bawku today. Also, I have never had any discussion with any police and directed them to allow anyone to attend any market or purchase anything from anyone. Such matters are not my responsibility,” Ayariga stated.
He emphasized that operational decisions regarding security fall exclusively under the jurisdiction of law enforcement agencies and that he does not influence their day-to-day directives.
“These are matters within the purview of law enforcement officers, and no decision of a law enforcement officer should be blamed on me because I don’t control them operationally,” he clarified.
The MP urged security personnel to collaborate with traditional leaders to restore peace and maintain stability in the area.
“Law enforcement officers are advised to work with Abugrago Azoka II, the Zugran and overlord of Kusaug, to maintain law and order in his Traditional Area,” he added.
