Accra, Greater Accra Region, Ghana – Thursday, April 24, 2025, 10:35 AM GMT – The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana will commence issuing new chip-embedded electronic passports (e-passports) starting Monday, April 28, 2025.

These upgraded passports, initially unveiled on December 2, 2024, feature enhanced biometric capabilities designed to streamline international travel and significantly bolster document security for Ghanaian citizens.

Each e-passport incorporates a secure microchip that digitally stores the passport holder’s biometric data and photograph. Furthermore, the new passports are equipped with advanced anti-fraud measures, including both readily visible and concealed security features, providing a higher level of protection against counterfeiting and identity theft.

These e-passports will replace the existing biometric passports and are engineered to meet stringent international standards while proudly showcasing Ghana’s rich cultural heritage. The design thoughtfully integrates iconic Adinkra symbols such as “Fawohodie” (representing freedom and independence) and “Funtunfunefu Denkyemfunefu” (symbolizing democracy and cooperation).

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra on Wednesday, April 23, Mr. Ablakwa emphasized that the introduction of these new passports is a crucial component of a broader reform agenda aimed at strengthening passport security, eliminating the involvement of intermediaries in the application process, and fostering greater transparency.

He highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to delivering a seamless and citizen-focused passport service that is easily accessible to all Ghanaians and free from third-party interference.

The rollout of the e-passports is part of a comprehensive suite of reforms slated for 2025. These additional measures include the introduction of 24-hour passport processing, courier delivery services for completed passports, an electronic application tracking system, and a significant 30% reduction in passport application fees.

Chip-embedded passports are already in widespread use across numerous countries and are recognized for providing robust protection against identity theft and fraudulent activities. Mr. Ablakwa described this initiative as a pivotal step in the government’s ongoing efforts to digitize public services and modernize Ghana’s passport system, ultimately benefiting citizens in Accra, Kumasi, and throughout the nation.
