President John Dramani Mahama has issued a firm warning to all political appointees, stating that his administration will enforce strict sanctions against any individual who violates the newly launched Code of Conduct, regardless of their position or influence.

The Code of Conduct, officially launched on Monday, May 5, 2025, establishes clear ethical standards for public officials, specifically prohibiting actions such as awarding government contracts to oneself, family members, or close associates, which President Mahama described as a betrayal of public trust.

Addressing the assembled appointees, President Mahama stressed the seriousness of the new policy, stating, “Coding in state companies that deal with government or with your ministries, using insider knowledge for personal benefit, awarding contracts that are connected to yourselves or your close family,” would not be tolerated.

He made it clear that consequences for breaches of the Code would be non-negotiable, and that sanctions would be applied rigorously, potentially including reprimands, suspensions, or even dismissals.

President Mahama also emphasized the importance of full transparency and disclosure from all appointees. “If you are a dormant partner in any business engaging with any business even outside your ministry, you must disclose it in writing to this office,” he instructed. “Not through a telephone call, not through a relative, but you must submit an official declaration. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.”

The implementation of this Code of Conduct is a key component of the Mahama administration’s broader strategy to enhance accountability, integrity, and ethical governance within public service institutions. The President’s strong stance underscores his commitment to ensuring that public officials adhere to the highest ethical standards.
