Carlo Ancelotti will leave Real Madrid for Brazil at the end of the season

Carlo Ancelotti has spoken warmly about his time at Real Madrid, saying he holds no ill feelings toward the club as he prepares to depart for a new challenge with the Brazil national team.

The 65-year-old Italian, who has enjoyed a successful spell at the Santiago Bernabéu, will officially begin his tenure as Brazil’s head coach on 26 May, just one day after Real Madrid conclude their 2024-25 season against Real Sociedad.

Although the Brazilian Football Confederation confirmed his upcoming role on Monday, Real Madrid has yet to release a formal statement. Ancelotti, however, addressed the announcement in a press conference, emphasizing his gratitude and respect for the Spanish giants.

“If I didn’t have to do the press conference today, it would be perfect,” Ancelotti said. “There are things I can’t fully explain right now because I’m still at Madrid, and I want to respect the shirt.”

He added: “From 26 May, I’ll be Brazil’s coach. It’s an exciting new challenge, but I’m focused on finishing this incredible journey at Madrid the right way.”

Reflecting on his relationship with the club, Ancelotti was clear: “I’ve never had a problem with Real and I never will. This club is dear to my heart. But everything in life has an end.”

He acknowledged that change is natural in football: “I couldn’t be Madrid’s coach forever. Sometimes a club needs new energy, a fresh direction. I’m not making a fuss about it. I’m thankful—deeply thankful—for everything.”

As Ancelotti prepares to hand over the reins, Bayer Leverkusen boss and former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso is widely tipped to take over.

In closing, Ancelotti reflected on his legacy at Madrid with pride: “It’s the end of a spectacular era. I never imagined I’d coach Real for six years. But I did—and I’ll always be a fan of this club.”
