U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with Russia’s Vladimir Putin on Monday to discuss peace in Ukraine. The call occurred after Washington described the situation as an impasse in efforts to end the nearly four-year conflict, the deadliest in Europe since World War Two, and suggested the United States might withdraw from negotiations.
Trump’s conversation with the Russian President followed talks between Russia and Ukraine, mediated by Turkish officials, aimed at establishing a ceasefire.
Reports indicate that a White House official confirmed the call was in progress. Putin was speaking from Russia’s Black Sea resort of Sochi, while Trump was in Washington.
Just before the call, U.S. Vice President JD Vance told reporters that Washington acknowledged the stalemate in ending the war. Vance indicated that if Moscow remained unwilling to engage, the United States would eventually have to declare that the conflict was not its concern.
