The University of Ghana has clarified that its recent suspension of social gatherings on campus does not extend to academic lectures.

The Dean of Students Affairs, Professor Rosina Kyeremanten, emphasized that lectures are not classified as social events under the university’s current health and safety protocols.

“Lectures are not social gatherings,” she stated. “In a lecture room, you do not have students shouting and jumping. But during events like artiste nights or concerts, there’s a lot of movement and excitement, which pose higher health risks.”

Prof. Kyeremanten explained that lectures are structured and controlled, unlike recreational events such as hall weeks and concerts, which have been temporarily suspended due to health concerns.

“In lecture halls, it’s mainly the lecturer speaking. While students may occasionally contribute, it’s a far more orderly environment compared to a concert,” she said.

She also assured students and staff that safety measures remain in place for in-person lectures, including mandatory face masks and adherence to social distancing guidelines where possible.

“We’re committed to ensuring student safety while maintaining academic activities,” she concluded.
