Ghana is facing a disturbing increase in fire-related deaths and injuries, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Between January and June 2025, 16 lives were lost to fire incidents, representing a 33% surge compared to the same period in 2024.
Moreover, fire-related injuries skyrocketed by 266%, from 30 cases in the first half of 2024 to 110 cases in the same period this year.
Common causes of these fire outbreaks include electrical faults, gas cylinder explosions, and careless handling of combustible materials.
Unregulated electrical wiring, substandard appliances, and improper storage of flammable materials are often contributing factors.
Overcrowding and inadequate fire safety infrastructure in markets and residential areas, particularly in major cities like Accra and Kumasi, exacerbate the risk.
In response, the GNFS is intensifying public awareness campaigns to educate Ghanaians on basic fire safety tips, proper handling of electrical appliances, and the importance of fire extinguishers in homes and workplaces.
The service also stresses the need for regular electrical checks and adherence to building codes to minimize fire risks.
