The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region has begun compiling a list of farmers in Sikaman affected by restrictions placed on access to the forest following the recent fatal helicopter crash.
The crash site, now under restricted access, has left many farmers unable to reach their farmlands—sparking concerns over potential food shortages and threats to their livelihoods.
Although Joseph Azumah, Member of Parliament for the area, has promised support for affected residents, local authorities are still verifying the list to determine how many farmers have been directly impacted.
District Chief Executive (DCE) Gariba Mohammed Mustapha said the verification process is ongoing.
“The initial list submitted had about 219 names, which seemed excessive. We’re reviewing the names, and by the end of the week, we’ll have a clearer picture. From our assessment, the number of genuinely affected farmers may be around 20,” he stated.
The DCE also revealed that following a public appeal to return any items recovered from the crash site, only a wristwatch has been handed in so far. Other remains recovered include only helicopter debris.
The tragic helicopter crash occurred on August 6 in the Adansi Akrofuom forest area and claimed the lives of several prominent figures, including:
- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence
- Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation
- Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
- Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate
- Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
Also on board were three military officers — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — all of whom perished in the crash.
A state funeral for all victims will be held on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square in Accra, following individual burial ceremonies. Ghanaians began paying their final respects on Sunday, August 10, starting with Dr. Murtala Muhammed and Muniru Mohammed.
