Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has encouraged New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopefuls and their supporters to maintain a respectful and ideas-driven approach as the party prepares for its presidential primary in January 2026.
Addressing over 490 youth organizers—including both main and deputy constituency youth leaders—who presented his nomination forms on Wednesday, August 13, Dr. Bawumia stressed the importance of a campaign centered on solutions, not personal attacks.
“I want this flagbearership contest to be conducted with respect. This is not a campaign for trading insults. It should be about the ideas we bring forward—ideas that can capture the hopes and aspirations of Ghanaians,” he stated.
He emphasized the need for aspirants to focus on what they can offer the country, rather than tearing others down. “What are our solutions to the problems facing Ghanaians? That’s the conversation we need to have. I urge all aspirants and their supporters to promote their candidates based on merit and vision.”
Dr. Bawumia also warned that negative campaigning could harm the party’s image and serve the interests of its opponents.
“When we attack each other, we weaken the party. Our rivals will take those same messages and use them against us,” he cautioned.
Pledging to avoid personal attacks himself, Dr. Bawumia reminded party members of the bigger picture: national elections beyond the internal contest.
“You will never hear me insult any of my fellow aspirants. Once this internal election is over, we’ll need to unite and focus on winning the general election. If we are divided now, we risk struggling later. Let’s begin this process with unity and end it the same way—because that’s what will lead us to victory in 2028,” he concluded.
