The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has firmly condemned recent death threats made against President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama, stating that such actions are unacceptable and do not represent the values of the party.

NPP General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Koduah, made the statement during a courtesy visit to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters on Wednesday, August 13. He met with NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah and other party executives to address growing concerns over the incident.

“There are unfortunate and condemnable comments made from time to time—sometimes by foot soldiers or individuals with no formal ties to the party,” Koduah said. “But when such statements surface, it is our duty as leadership to disassociate the party from them and make it clear that they are not reflective of our principles.”

Koduah acknowledged that political tensions can lead to inflammatory rhetoric on both sides, but emphasized that threats of death should never be part of Ghana’s democratic environment.

“Some are suggesting the NPP is behind these threats, and others are even implying that more deaths were expected. These statements are deeply troubling. Wishing death on anyone—especially a political opponent—has no place in a functioning democracy,” he said.

He went further to apologise on behalf of the NPP in the event that any individual linked to the party was involved in the threats.

“If anything linked to the NPP has contributed to this, we sincerely apologise to the NDC and to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama. The New Patriotic Party does not endorse such actions, and we absolutely reject that form of politics,” Koduah added.

His comments come as the Ghana Police Service investigates a viral TikTok video in which a man is heard issuing direct threats to the lives of President Mahama and the First Lady. The video, which has been widely circulated, has sparked public outcry and political tension.

So far, two individuals—Prince Ofori and Yayra Abiwu—have been arrested in connection with the threats. Police say the suspects are assisting with ongoing investigations to identify others involved in the production and distribution of the video.

Meanwhile, an Accra Circuit Court has granted Prince Ofori bail set at GHS100,000, with three sureties. Two of the sureties must be gainfully employed. The court has also ordered him to surrender his passport and return for his next hearing on August 25, 2025.
