Construction crews have returned to the Pokuase–Nsawam road, resuming long-delayed repair works and bringing much-needed relief to motorists who have endured weeks of severe traffic congestion.

The return to site comes just days before a one-week ultimatum issued by the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) was set to expire on Wednesday, August 20. The union had threatened to suspend operations if contractors were not re-engaged to fix the deteriorating road.

Member of Parliament for Amasaman, Sedem Afenyo, confirmed that he had received assurances from authorities that the repair works would progress steadily in the coming days.

“Traffic flow on the stretch has improved significantly. This is the first time in weeks that vehicles are moving freely,” he said.

Mr. Afenyo detailed recent progress made along key sections of the road:

“Saturday morning, I noticed some work underway. When I returned from church on Sunday, the contractors were still working. Today, they’ve moved to Sapeiman and Samsam Junction. At Samsam, there’s been some filling, and at Sapeiman, they’ve done leveling and reshaping.”

He noted that this marks the first time in two months that vehicles have been able to travel the route without encountering major delays.

The engineers on site informed him that if weather conditions remain favorable, they plan to complete the filling and leveling by the end of the week, then shift traffic to one side of the road to begin asphalting and continue repairs on the opposite side.

The resumed works are expected to ease the burden on daily commuters and restore a vital transportation link between key areas in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
