Emmanuel Kwakye Asare, a journalist with Kumasi-based Wontumi FM, has been granted bail after spending two weeks in police custody.
Asare was arrested on August 12, 2025, and charged with one count of offensive conduct related to the alleged publication of false news intended to cause fear and panic.
The court granted him bail set at GH₵100,000, with two sureties—both of whom must be civil servants. His legal team is currently in the process of fulfilling the bail conditions.
He is scheduled to reappear in court on September 1, 2025, as proceedings continue.
The charge stems from comments made during his radio program, where he alleged that former President John Dramani Mahama was aware of the August 6, 2025, helicopter crash that claimed eight lives.
Prosecutors opposed the bail application, citing ongoing investigations. However, Presiding Judge Samuel Bright Acquah granted the request, noting that there was no compelling reason to deny bail. He referenced a previous case involving a young man remanded for insulting former President Akufo-Addo to support his ruling.
