Professor Franklyn Manu, Board Chairman of the MTN Ghana Foundation, has issued a strong warning that youth unemployment poses a serious threat to Ghana’s future stability if not urgently addressed.
Speaking during the “Bright Conversations” forum, where the Foundation reflected on its journey, impact, and future direction, Professor Manu emphasized the need for practical and sustainable solutions to tackle unemployment among young people.
According to him, while Ghana’s economy is growing, it is not adequately supporting the youth. He stressed that simply creating economic growth without inclusive policies will not be enough to solve the underlying issues.
“Unemployment among the youth is a national concern. If not resolved, it could burn the country one day,” he stated.
Professor Manu also criticized a growing mindset among young people of seeking comfort in salaried jobs without a willingness to work hard or explore entrepreneurial paths.
He urged the country’s leadership to shift their mindset and build systems that support youth engagement in the economy. “Leadership must rethink how the economy functions. The youth, in turn, must understand that there are no shortcuts to success,” he said.
The professor encouraged young Ghanaians to develop the right attitude and skills to make them relevant in society. He acknowledged the discouragement many face after completing their education only to find limited job opportunities, but insisted that resilience, skills development, and a proactive mindset are essential for long-term success.
