The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, has vowed that Accra will see significant improvements in cleanliness and street lighting by December 2025.

Speaking at the launch of a GH¢2 billion decentralisation fund, the Minister tasked all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) within the Greater Accra Region to prioritize efforts to meet this ambitious target within the next three months.

Mr. Ibrahim highlighted sanitation and street lighting as top priorities, citing poor conditions observed during recent night visits across the city.

“We travelled from Sakumono to Kasoa, then to Kaneshie, Circle, and the Police Headquarters. The only areas where street lights were functioning were Jubilee House and the police headquarters,” he noted. “At night, the streets are dark. During the day, they’re filthy.”

To address these issues, the Minister announced the implementation of a new strategic plan aimed at rapidly improving conditions across the capital.

“We have developed a clear strategy to clean up the streets and restore proper lighting over the next three months. This is not optional—accountability will be mandatory,” he emphasized.

The decentralisation fund is expected to empower local authorities with the resources needed to deliver on this directive and improve urban management across the region.
