Ghana coach Chris Hughton is focusing on the team’s match against Egypt, despite a confrontation with an angry supporter at the team’s hotel in Abidjan following the poor start to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
The incident occurred after Ghana’s surprising 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in their opening Group B match, which has left the team facing an uphill battle to reach the last 16.
Speaking to reporters, Hughton downplayed the incident, stating that it was “in the past” and that he appreciated the support he had received. He expressed gratitude for the messages of support but emphasized that the team’s focus is now on the game against Egypt.
The Black Stars have a tough task ahead, as a second consecutive defeat in Group B would likely result in elimination from the tournament. Ghana has not won the Africa Cup of Nations since 1982, and their recent performances have been inconsistent.
Hughton is hoping that attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus, who missed the opening game due to an injury, will be available to play against Egypt. The coach stated that Kudus has been training with the team and that a decision on his participation will be made tomorrow.
When asked about the possibility of remaining in his role as coach if Ghana were to be knocked out early in the tournament, Hughton responded that such questions were “immaterial.” He emphasised that his sole focus is on leading the team in the upcoming game.
Egypt, led by star player Mohamed Salah, drew 2-2 with Mozambique in their first match, needing an injury-time penalty to salvage a point. The Pharaohs will be eager to bounce back against Ghana and secure a spot in the knockout stages.
