Victims of Akosombo Dam spillage are preparing to sue government over the lack of action to resettle and compensate victims of disaster.
Members of Parliament in affected communities are up in arms against the inter-ministerial committee set up by President Akufo-Addo.
According to North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa although the committee was established to alleviate the suffering of their people after nearly a year, nothing has been done.
“We don’t want this to be hidden from you. We have said that if government does not do something about compensation, we have spoken to our lawyers, we are headed to court because it is our right. So, we don’t want to hide this from you.
“If in the next few weeks, because next month will be the first anniversary, we have met and said that if by the first anniversary we don’t get strong indication, we don’t see actually the first group of people receiving compensation then we have no choice to resort to the court for class action,” he said.
He was speaking during a stakeholder hearing on the disaster on August 26.
Minister of Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey also cautioned the Volta River Authority (VRA) to adhere to all protocols in subsequence exercises to prevent any havoc.
