Dozens of armed police officers were deployed to the Asiakwa to Bunso bypass construction site on Thursday to quell a protest by aggrieved farmers and landowners.
The protesters, from Akyem Asiakwa and Bunso, demanded immediate compensation for the destruction of their properties due to the ongoing construction project.
The farmers and landowners claimed that the government had failed to deliver on promises made over a year ago to compensate them for their losses.
Many protesters have been struggling to survive and have not received any form of compensation.
The protesters blocked the roads at the construction site, setting up makeshift camps and cooking utensils to demonstrate their determination to stay put until their demands were met.
Contractors, including First Sky and Justmoh Company, were forced to halt work due to the protest.
The bypass construction is part of the broader Accra-Kumasi highway dualization project, aimed at reducing traffic congestion.
However, the affected farmers and landowners argue that the government’s failure to compensate them has caused significant hardship.
The project, which began over a year ago, includes four major bypass roads. Despite the project’s progress, the protesters’ demands for compensation remain unmet, leading to continued protests.
