Leicester has successfully appealed a decision that could have resulted in a points deduction for allegedly breaching Premier League profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
An independent panel determined that the Premier League lacked jurisdiction to penalize the club since they had been relegated to the EFL Championship by the end of their accounting period on June 30, 2023.
The Premier League expressed surprise and disappointment at the panel’s decision, while Leicester stated they aimed to ensure the rules were applied as written.
The charges related to spending rules during the three-year period ending with the 2022-23 season.
However, the club’s relegation to the Championship meant they were no longer subject to Premier League jurisdiction when the charges were issued.
Notably, the independent panel criticized the PSR rules as “far from well drafted” in relevant parts.
This outcome contrasts with recent points deductions given to Nottingham Forest and Everton for similar breaches.
