Rebecca Cheptegei, a 33-year-old Ugandan marathon runner, has died after sustaining extensive burns in an attack.
The incident is under investigation by authorities in Kenya, where Cheptegei lived and trained.
The case has raised concerns about violence against female athletes in the region.
Cheptegei was a accomplished athlete, having competed in the Paris Olympics and won gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in 2022.
Cheptegei’s former boyfriend was also admitted to the hospital – but with less severe burns. He is still in intensive care but his condition was “improving and stable”, Dr Menach said.
Her legacy will be remembered, and her family and community are seeking justice.
