The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred during a National Democratic Congress (NDC) protest in Kumasi.
The incident left a police officer injured.
Tension escalated during the “Enough is Enough” demonstration when protesters clashed with law enforcement. Police used tear gas to disperse the crowds, but the situation turned violent as demonstrators attempted to breach the Electoral Commission’s premises.
One protester was injured during the confrontation and required medical attention. The exact cause of the altercation remains under investigation.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the police confirmed that the demonstration concluded peacefully in most areas, except for an isolated incident in Kumasi. Despite prior agreements, protesters attempted to force their way into the Electoral Commission’s premises and hurled stones at police officers.
While the police managed to restore order, one officer sustained injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment. Inspector-General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has expressed his well-wishes to the injured officer.
The police acknowledged the cooperation of all stakeholders, including the organizers, demonstrators, Electoral Commission, media, and the public, during the protest.
They also extended their gratitude to officers nationwide for their commitment to maintaining security and order.
