Former Aston Villa striker Gary Shaw has tragically passed away at the age of 63.
Shaw, a key member of Villa’s European Cup-winning side of 1982, succumbed to injuries sustained in a fall.
The club released a statement expressing their deep sorrow and shock at the news. “Gary was one of our own, a talented striker who delighted supporters with his goalscoring exploits,” they said. “He passed away peacefully earlier today surrounded by his family.”
Shaw, a product of Villa’s youth academy, scored 79 goals in 213 appearances for the club. He was named the PFA Young Player of the Year in 1981 and the European Young Player of the Year in 1982.
In addition to his time at Villa, Shaw also played for Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, and Shrewsbury Town.
Following his retirement in 1992, he worked as a statistical analyst and served as a club ambassador at Villa Park.
