The Ghana Water Company Limited has acquired four new pumping systems to enhance water production capacity in Accra and alleviate water rationing in the capital.
The new equipment is expected to significantly improve water availability for both domestic and industrial use.
The breakdown of two water pumping systems at the Weija treatment plant, which supplies nearly 26 million gallons of water to the Accra-Tema Metropolitan Assembly, had led to a 20% reduction in capacity, causing widespread water shortages in western areas of Accra.
Regional Chief Manager Ing. Charles Tulashie explained that the new pumping systems were necessary to address the decline in production capacity, which had affected areas such as Achimota, Tesano, North Kaneshie, Dansoman, and the Kasoa corridor.
Dr. Hamidu Alhassan, a board member of the Ghana Water Company, emphasized that the purchase of the new equipment was funded through internally generated revenue.
He expressed confidence that the new systems would restore full production capacity and ensure improved water distribution for consumers.
