A tragic incident occurred in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region when a young woman succumbed to rabies after being bitten by a dog.
Despite being bitten two months ago, the family reportedly neglected to seek proper medical attention, leading to a fatal outcome.
According to a family member, Charles Bugbire, the woman’s husband had initially dismissed the dog bite after the wound healed.
A local nurse was engaged to provide treatment at home, but the woman’s condition deteriorated, prompting her to be taken to Ayamfoya Memorial Hospital.
The hospital recognized the severity of the case and referred her to the Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga.
The Director of Ayamfoya Memorial Hospital, Thomas More, expressed sadness over the incident and highlighted similar cases in the area.
He revealed that five people, including the woman, her husband, and their three children, had been bitten by the same dog.
At the Regional Hospital, the woman exhibited advanced signs of rabies, including foaming at the mouth, shouting, and barking like a dog.
These symptoms caused fear among hospital staff, who warned relatives about the contagious nature of rabies saliva.
Despite desperate prayers from her husband and church members, the woman tragically passed away on September 22nd.
The Member of Parliament for the area, Dr. Mark Kurt Nawaane, emphasized the importance of seeking immediate medical attention after a dog bite.
He stressed that the anti-rabies injection, although expensive, could have saved the woman’s life.
