Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has publicly accused President John Dramani Mahama of returning to the presidency with a “vengeance in his heart,” citing recent political events, particularly the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, as evidence.

Afenyo-Markin made these strong allegations on Monday, May 5, 2025, during a demonstration organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to protest the Chief Justice’s suspension. Following the submission of a petition to Parliament, he addressed the gathered crowd, expressing deep concern over the alleged politicization of state institutions under President Mahama’s administration. 1

“It is becoming increasingly clear that former President Mahama has returned to power not with a reconciliatory spirit, but with vengeance in his heart,” Afenyo-Markin declared. “We are witnessing actions aimed not at building but breaking down institutions.”

He specifically pointed to the suspension of Chief Justice Torkornoo as a prime example of what he perceives as a deliberate attempt to undermine the independence of the judiciary and suppress dissenting voices.

“We must not allow personal vendettas to dictate national policy,” Afenyo-Markin cautioned. “This country deserves leadership grounded in justice and reconciliation, not retribution.”

The NPP-led demonstration, which drew significant participation from party supporters and civil society organizations, was organized to voice opposition to what organizers deemed an unconstitutional and politically motivated decision.

The petition presented to Parliament formally demands an immediate and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Chief Justice’s suspension and calls for the restoration of constitutional order. These accusations from the Minority Leader are likely to intensify the already heated political climate in Ghana.
