Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has defended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s handling of the economy, asserting that his administration performed well despite facing substantial challenges.
In an interview, Ahiagbah attributed the economic difficulties experienced under Akufo-Addo’s leadership to external shocks. He argued that under normal circumstances, Ghana’s economy would have been much stronger by the time Akufo-Addo finishes his term in 2025.
“The task of managing the economy was not performed badly by Akufo-Addo. If you remove the real external shocks we faced, the economy would be in a much better position than where we are now,” Ahiagbah said.
He pointed to the positive growth in the economy in recent months, noting that for the first three quarters of the year, the economy grew by approximately 7%. “This shows that by 2025, there will be continued momentum for growth,” he added.
Ahiagbah also emphasized that while the economy faced setbacks, the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration managed to recover it.
He dismissed claims that the party avoided discussions about the economy during the election campaign, reiterating their commitment to addressing economic issues.
